The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, recalled on Monday that as finance minister he used to “pull back” the late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy when he made promises to farmers and the poor, reminding him of budgetary constraints.

“But there is nobody behind me and so I have to discuss issues with relevant ministers and officials before giving a promise,” he quipped while responding to a series of representations given to him by people.

Emphasising the commitment and courage of YSR, he remembered the late Chief Minister’s commitment to welfare schemes.

In all, 37,000 police constables were recruited during YSR’s tenure to help maintain law and order, said the Chief Minister after the inauguration of District Police Training Centre at Saripalli village in Nellimerla mandal on Monday.

He complimented cops for doing their duty to safeguard the people unmindful of the hot sun and heavy rain.

“They don’t even get to spend time with their family members or children like other government employees,” he said.

He pointed out that two candidates who took part in the sprint during the police recruitment test had died of cardiac arrest but added that the government could not liberalise the test.

Later, while meeting mediapersons, the Chief Minister asked them in a lighter mood not to ‘duplicate’ his Sunday speeches while covering his Monday press conference and get scolded by their bosses.
